EVOLVING PHONE SCREENS: MAY SOON BE IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT & REPEL GERMS
One of the biggest challenges of using technology outdoors is the inability to clearly read most screens in direct sunlight. It’s nearly impossible to read your phone or laptop screen under the sun, which is quite inconvenient whether you’re trying to read emails on the go or simply text your friend back. An American glass manufacturer called Corning has created a glass treatment product that can render the treated area extremely non-reflective. This manufacturer currently supplies the protective Gorilla Glass found on 1.5 billion mobile phones globally, including smartphones.
In the above image, it may appear that there is a hole in the center of the glass, but in reality, this ‘hole’ is a treated section of the glass that doesn’t reflect anything; the glass treatment allows you to see perfectly through the crystal clear glass. If this product were applied to a phone screen, you’d be able to fully view and read your emails, text messages, and other notices without any obfuscation caused by the reflection of sunlight.
In addition to the anti-reflective product, Corning is also developing a germ-resistant glass treatment that could protect consumers’ health. VP Jeff Evenson spoke during the Summit and used the example of eating a sandwich with the same hand you just answered your phone with to demonstrate that the germs and bacteria on your phone could easily be transferred to foods or other surfaces you want to keep sterile.
Although we don’t have any word on when this type of glass treatment will be available for consumers to use on their phones, the development is promising and will provide a huge improvement in the experience of mobile phone users
